Casa Magna Domus Magnus, Cigar Review

The Domus Magnus by Casa Magna Cigars, blended by Manuel Quesada is a limited edition stogie.
IMG_0001

Wrapper is a Sun Grown Nicaraguan (Jalapa Valley)

Binder is Nicaraguan

Filler Nicaraguan

Body, medium to Full

This box pressed cigar has very smooth appearance with relatively no vein properties to the wrapper, a pigtail tops of this beauty.   A Casa Magna ring with a light butter nut yellow color and a foot ring designating the Domus Magnus limitada label as well is present.

The feel of this stogie is medium firm to the touch.

Pre light draw yields no hint of the the notes to follow.  Initially, pepper is notable.  Not an overbearing pepper but pepper none the less, especially when nosehaled.  Hints of chocolate and a subtle fruityness (unknown) are evident as well.   The pepper almost immediately subsides and becomes non existent through the first third.  The chocolate and fruity notes are the predominate.

By midpoint, hints of leather a touch of nut is also apparent.  Still the chocolate lingers on the lips throughout

IMG_0004

The burn of this stogie is very straight, and it produces a considerable amount of smoke and has an effortless draw.  The ash is light and drops off easily.  This is what I expected when the feel of the cigar was not extremely tight, firm but not tight.

By the bottom third, the nuttyness has become predominant and the chocolate and fruit are simply nuances.  The leather is just in the background but holds on.

Overall this is a smooth and very special cigar.  It burns wonderfully and evolves from end to end.

The price point for a limited edition cigar like this would be expected to be much higher but at about 9 bucks WOW!  Definately a recommend, with two thumbs up!

Cohiba Extra Vigoroso Robusto Cigar Review

Cigar Review of the Cohiba Extra Vigoroso Robusto009

Cigar Specs:

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra        Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf   Filler:  Nicaraguan and Piloto Cubano ligero

Hows it look:

Very smooth deep coffee brown wrapper, very thin veinage but smooth overall.  Firm stogie over all but a slight spongeyness near the foot.

Pre-light draw was notably difficult, may need a slight touch up if the draw continues to be tight.  Not much but earth on pre-light draw flavor.

Lets lite this baby:  On lite up I get the initial earthy flavor notes similar to pre-lite.  I aslo need to give this a touch up clip to get better draw.  Once touched up the draw got much better, but was still quite tight overall.

First 1/4 : Earthy, a bit of a citrusy after taste lingers.

half way mark:  Not much has changed, earthy, a hard draw, even after a second touch up.  The citrus has disappeared, leaving this stogie pretty uni-dimensional.

Bottom end: No real developments with this one.  Nothing to write home about.  The draw never improved, the flavor never evolved, ehhh, it’s an average stogie, with an above average price, but fortunately this one was a gift.  All I can say is, average.

Recommend: ahhh, nope.  theres  tons better out there especially at this price range of about 10.00 a pop.

Well until the next one,  ” Sit Back Relax and Have a Cigar” just not this one.010

Cigar Review : Tatuaje Gran Cojonu

Cigar Review of the Tatuaje Gran Cojonu

Cigar: Tatuaje Grand Cojonu
Size: 6.5 x 60
013

Wrapper: Nicaragua Corojo Binder: Nicaragua   Filler: Nicaragua

Strength Full

Smooth wrapper with some usual thin veinage, little to zero tooth.  Firmly rolled.  Foot is rolled over.

 014

Pre-light draw yields a hint of spice, clove? cinnamon?  right around there, pretty interesting to have this before even firing it up.  So lets get to it!   Great amount of smoke from the get go.  Smooth , with lots of pepper. Through the first third the pepper is dominant,  some leathery notes are intertwined and the finish is long on this stogie.

016As I get to the second third the pepper appears to be mellowing a bit.  I notice what seems to be a chocolate note emerging.  This chocolate develops through the second third and all but replaces the pepper, which has faded away by the end of the second third.  The pepper that was primary and strong on nosehale throughout the first third is barely noticeable throughout the second third.  The chocolate lingers on the palate, very pleasantly mingles again with what I perceive as clove or cinnamon again.  The burn is relatively razor sharp and the tight white ash holds on really well.  i pondered not ashing until it dropped on its own but tipped it at the last third to avoid the ash to the chest hairs and in the pool.

017

At the bottom third some pepper notes reappear but they are more a passing flavor than the basis of it, which has turned to some leather, clove and chocolate mixture.  The pepper doesnt materialize on nose hale only on the inhale.

018 This cigar is a complex one with plenty of power and a long finish.  I can only compare it to the other Tatuajes in this family, the 2003, and the Black Tube as they appear to share some similarities.  Although a wonderful cigar overall, I still regard the 2003 Cojonu as my personal favorite, but I will never turn one of these down as it is definately a great cigar and a pleasure through and through.

019

AS always “Sit Back relax and Have a Cigar” you deserve it!  El Cubanito , El Cubanito Cigars.

Cigar Review Illusione 88 Robusto

004
This cigar review of the Illusione 88 robusto is treat, Ive had a couple of these Illusione stogies but the 88 is my favorite so far.

Blend Nicaraguan, filler binder and wrapper

The wrapper is a corojo, with deep reddish hue. some veinage and minor tooth is notable. This stogie is notably heavier when compared to other robustos, it is firm and no soft spots are evident. A beautiful triple cap cover the head. The ring is simple slender. Black and white, with 88 and the name Illusione on it.

The prelight draw is pleasant, a slight hint of cinnamon is what comes to the forefront.

I used a punch to open up this cigar, and without further delay lets fire it up!

Lite up yields some sweetness on the lips, along with the expected woodsey initial taste. After a couple puffs, a notable spiceyness develops. Not a peppery spice however, though and not very poweful, hmmm! different. Ok, spice and citrus is what Im getting, very pleasant.

009

A fair amount of smoke and a very smooth easy draw from this stogie. No flavor hangover on the tongue. The flavor is clean and distinct but doesnt lay there til the next puff to get stale like some do.

A few more puffs and the spiceyness all but disappeared. There is still a slightly citrusy note and a sweetness on the lips with every draw, but no spice right now. Nose hale is smooth with no spice whatsoever at the first third.

As I get down to the middle of this cigar the flavor has remained consistant, not very complex but quite enjoyable. The smoothness and flavor profile make this a relaxing smoke. Not to say its bland by any means. Theres just not a big swing in the flavor thus far.

The strength of this stogie is above average, not for the meek and mild.

The burn has been prefect thus far. No touch ups or re-lights to this point. On other occasions I have had to relight this specific blend but no flame outs yet with this one. A word of caution however, the ash is unforgiving and is prone to drop off with out notice at even 3/4 inches in length so take care.

Just past the half way mark and what I perceive to be a light cocoa chocolate flavor developed. Just slight enough to notice but not enough to overwhelm or mask the ever present citrus notes on the rear of the palate. Now a bit of spice has re-appeared this time on the lips and tip of the tongue. Some licorice flavor is also apparent. So much for not being complex, it just took a bit if time to develop, but at the half way mark things have perked up. Hope it keeps on rolling like this. I’ve had a couple of these but usually while sippin on a beverage and playin poker, not paying as close attention as I should or could have.

I Found this cigar review to be amongst the most enjoyable ones, as this stogie is easily in my top 5 , along with the Tatuaje conoju 2003, Tatuaje tubo negro, Arturo Fuente Anejo and the Tatuaje tubo rojo. I had trouble puttin this stogie down. Burned it to a nub.

011

Overall impression:

Construction excellent
Flavor built slowly but developed well and was very pleasing
Burn impeccable
Price, just right at about 8 bucks

Cigar Review, Brocatus, El Cubanito Cigars

ASIANCIGARCigar review of Brocatus Cigar, Dominican made

Connecticut Wrapper, Dominican long filler

This stogie is out of my normal comfort zone as it is listed as a mild cigar

The wrapper looks nice and smooth, a light wrapper, made of Connecticut broadleaf

The roll is very firm

Initial pre-light sniff gives no real aroma

The first draw upon lighting gives me some trouble, it was a pretty hard draw, and the flavor is very light, with that mild stogie “tang” or after taste.

About a third of the way down, and this stogie reveals no real pizazz, but it is a mild cigar, so I will deal with it.

The only real flavor that i can pick up is a slight sour after taste on the back of my tongue.  It is coupled with a sense of pastey coating overall.  Hmm! mild cigar so far no good, at least not for me.

Half way done , yeah!  its not that this cigar has a bad taste, it just lacks any taste.  So Im wondering whats the use.

I think Ill put this one down and go rinse my mouth! Cant finish what aint there.

Overall,

Appearance nice, roll too tight, draw very difficult.  Flavor, none.

BOOOh!  The only reason to pu a photo to this add would be so you can see what not to pick at the cigar shop.

Cigar Review, La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero

Cigar review of La Flor Dominicana , double ligero, Corona GordaDSCN0645

60×6.5

Dominican filler, binder

Ecuadorian Sungrown wrapper

Beautiful color on the wrapper, some dark mottling, medium veins, tooth notable.

Firmly rolled

The prelight sniff is very nice, barnyardy

Prelight draw did not yield much

V-cut

This cigars initial light impression was power and spice, with licorice and nut.

Lots of smoke right from the start.

The ash didnt hold but a 1/4 inch, dropped off by merely setting this cigar into the ashtray

The first 2 inches approximately down yielded plenty of spice (black pepper), licorice, some nuttyness and black coffee. DSCN0647

The burn was even woth a great draw, yierlding lots of smoke.

The ash is a nice grey tone dropping off initially at 1/4 inch and then holding for another 1.5 inches.

At the mid way point on this cigar, the flavors have been in and out, from nut with spice and licorice.  The nuttyness has been consistent.  The finish is somewhat short with the licorice being the predominant flavor to prevail.

At the back end of this stogie, approx 2.0hrs, and the whole experience has been good.

DSCN0648

Burn has been excellent and razor sharp.  Plenty of smoke, the draw is easy.  This cigar has good complexity, exceptional power and full body.

Rating:

Flavor: 9 of 10  Spicey (black pepper) licorice, black coffee, nutty (cashew like), hints of ginger as well

Burn: 9 of 10

Strength 8 of 10

Complexity 7 of 10

For the price this stogie is a keeper, about 8 bucks definately worth it

Patch 56 by Bad Dog Cigars

6×56 Stogie Brazilian Piraca Wrapper

Origin: Nicaragua

Pigtail head , Shaggy Foot

HPIM0763

Wrapper is smooth some vein is obvious

Not much on pre-light sniff or draw, the feel is a bit spongeyat the foot up to about the half way mark.

Once lit however an immediate sweetness is evident on the lips, and initial draw gives off some notable spice.  what also becomes very obvious is the amount of smoke this baby produces, awesome.  The spice gives way to an earthy flavor after the first couple of puffs.

HPIM0764

About an inch in and the burn is straght, with a nice grey ash.  Body is medium to full, strength is full.

The stogie burned quick from start to the first 2.5 inches, maybe due to the loose roll, but straight as an arrow.

HPIM0765

Taste so far has been straight forward, earthy, with a sweetness left on the lips.  Not much complexity, but a good taste overall.

HPIM0766

About midway through this cigar and still burn ing evenly , and has slowed down to a normal burn rate.  A bit of ginger root like flavor left on the palate is detectable.

The finish on this stogie lingers.

The overall flavor on this cigar is smooth, earthy, some ginger and a very small spicey black pepper component.

Burn is even, starting quick and then slowing down to normal or average brun rate.

Perdomo Lot 23 Robusto Maduro

HPIM0755El Cubanito Cigars
Cigar Review / Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro 5 x50
Origin: Esteli Nicaragua

Wrapper: appearance is relatively smooth, very minute veins and some tooth but overall smoothness is the norm.
Cap: double
Feel: evenly firm overall
Prelight sniff: mild barnyard

On light up the draw is good , first impression is earthy and some obvoius nuttiness.

The finish is short in the first third, there is a notable sweet note along with the nuttiness, no real spice at this point but smooth and tastey.

So far the burn is even , draw is ample and the ash is a nice grey
HPIM0760

At about an inch in to this stogie review and the sweetness is joined by a subtle spiceyness.

The strength is medium, as is the body at this point. The brun has become a bit jagged but nothing extreme, needing a fix.

About 2 inches down and the ash is holding firm. Nice and grey, some black blotchiness noted.

The body is still medium and the nutty sweetness is still predominant.

For a Nicaraguan cigar the spice is minimal, and nose hale is smooth with no heat . The burn at the midway point has not evened up but still ok. a quick toouch up with the torch and onward

AHH! and then there was spice, some good black pepper on the tongue and in the nose, right past the midway point.

Down to the back end this stogie has been smooth, nutty, sweet and spicey. Sounds like a chinese dinner. Its medium body was consistent throughout.

HPIM0762

All in all a good smoke for a reasonable price range of about 5-6 bucks a stick

see you next time, Sit Back RELAX and have a cigar.

Cigar Review Cusano Habano robusto

DSC00239A medium to full body cigar.  This particular cigar review is of the robusto line, Cusano Habano blend.

Dominican and Ecuadorian blend make up this cigar

The wrapper is a nice smooth chocolate caramel color, minimal veinage, no discernable tooth.  Some cracking noted at the foot but nothing of consequence.

No real outpouring on pre-light draw, smell was a bit flat as well pre-light.

after a lengthy lighting process it was a smooth taste at onset. a slightly sweet note was present on the short finish.

Nose hale did produce some spice, black pepper was dominant.DSC00240

This cigar has a smooth burn, with good flavor, some sweetness that hints of black cherry.  Notes of pepper are evident as is an earthy character.

Nice even burn, good amounts of smoke on the draw.  An overall good cigar for the price of about 6 bucks

Medium to Full body, but not much complexity.

Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigar review

Cigar review of the Arturo Fuente Opus X

DSCN0464

Fuente Fuente 5.6 X 46, Dominican Puro

Presentation :  over the top, this cigar comes in a cellophane wrapper, with a decroative foot band of red silk cloth, a cedar wrapper on the body, and a very elaborate cigar band, bearing the Opus X label.

Pre-light sniff gives some slight hint of cedar must surely from the body band just removed.

The wrapper on this stogie is very smooth, almost no veins to speak of, a rich reddish brown color.

The roll is tight, no soft spots noted at all.  A beautiful triple cap.

Snip, Snip and lets light this baby up, on pre-light draw, I picked up a nutmeggy to ginger like flavor, thats a first.

On light up, the black pepper hits hard, even for a cigar thats been aging in my humidor for over a year, and was at least three years aged prior to being given to me.

About an inch in and the pepper is joined by a hint of ginger on the finish, some creamy notes are also evident.  But the prominent flavor is pepper.  Although the initial burn started a bit uneven, it has since straightened out to near perfect.

DSCN0468

Some licorice has surfaced in conjunction with the ginger, its a bit odd, but interesting never the less.  the pepper has taken a back seat to this flavor combo.  at about 2 inches the ash was holding on strong but I tipped it off so as not to mess up my lap top.

The draw is excellent on this cigar, producing a thick smoke .  About half way now and the flavors have come together well, smooth finish, some pepper, ginger, and licorice still thriving.

The power on this stogie is formidable.  I must say its not for the meek and mild.

The last leg of this cigar has powered up.  But smooth all the way.

I can see why this cigar is so sought after, rightly so, an excellent Dominican puro.
