Patch 56 by Bad Dog Cigars

6×56 Stogie Brazilian Piraca Wrapper

Origin: Nicaragua

Pigtail head , Shaggy Foot

HPIM0763

Wrapper is smooth some vein is obvious

Not much on pre-light sniff or draw, the feel is a bit spongeyat the foot up to about the half way mark.

Once lit however an immediate sweetness is evident on the lips, and initial draw gives off some notable spice.  what also becomes very obvious is the amount of smoke this baby produces, awesome.  The spice gives way to an earthy flavor after the first couple of puffs.

HPIM0764

About an inch in and the burn is straght, with a nice grey ash.  Body is medium to full, strength is full.

The stogie burned quick from start to the first 2.5 inches, maybe due to the loose roll, but straight as an arrow.

HPIM0765

Taste so far has been straight forward, earthy, with a sweetness left on the lips.  Not much complexity, but a good taste overall.

HPIM0766

About midway through this cigar and still burn ing evenly , and has slowed down to a normal burn rate.  A bit of ginger root like flavor left on the palate is detectable.

The finish on this stogie lingers.

The overall flavor on this cigar is smooth, earthy, some ginger and a very small spicey lack pepper component.

Burn is even, starting quick and then slowing down to normal or average brun rate.

Perdomo Lot 23 Robusto Maduro

HPIM0755El Cubanito Cigars
Cigar Review / Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro 5 x50
Origin: Esteli Nicaragua

Wrapper: appearance is relatively smooth, very minute veins and some tooth but overall smoothness is the norm.
Cap: double
Feel: evenly firm overall
Prelight sniff: mild barnyard

On light up the draw is good , first impression is earthy and some obvoius nuttiness.

The finish is short in the first third, there is a notable sweet note along with the nuttiness, no real spice at this point but smooth and tastey.

So far the burn is even , draw is ample and the ash is a nice grey
HPIM0760

At about an inch in to this stogie review and the sweetness is joined by a subtle spiceyness.

The strength is medium, as is the body at this point. The brun has become a bit jagged but nothing extreme, needing a fix.

About 2 inches down and the ash is holding firm. Nice and grey, some black blotchiness noted.

The body is still medium and the nutty sweetness is still predominant.

For a Nicaraguan cigar the spice is minimal, and nose hale is smooth with no heat . The burn at the midway point has not evened up but still ok. a quick toouch up with the torch and onward

AHH! and then there was spice, some good black pepper on the tongue and in the nose, right past the midway point.

Down to the back end this stogie has been smooth, nutty, sweet and spicey. Sounds like a chinese dinner. Its medium body was consistent throughout.

HPIM0762

All in all a good smoke for a reasonable price range of about 5-6 bucks a stick

see you next time, Sit Back RELAX and have a cigar.

Flor de Selva Robusto, cigar review

flor-de-selva-robustoThis is a special cigar review, as this stogie was brought to me by a good friend directly from Honduras.  So I immediately felt compelled to light it up and giv e it a review.

This stogie is a robusto, 50 x5

wrapper: connecticut

Filler: honduras

Binder honduras

A mild cigar, with a pre-light draw that is a bit woody.

A very nice draw was immediately evident.

A third of the way in to this cigar the burn was perfect and the taste mild, a hint of pepper but very slight.  This cigar is smooth and could be a great morning stogie to enjoy with a cup of joe.

About half way down and the taste, body and finish remained consistent.  No real change was notable in the strength either.  This is an even steven cigar.  There is no denying its smoothness and very pleasant draw.  But what I enjoyed the most was the missing acidic tang found in many mild stogies.

Overall a great Sunday morning cigar

Thanks Tony!

Cigar Review Cusano Habano robusto

DSC00239A medium to full body cigar.  This particular cigar review is of the robusto line, Cusano Habano blend.

Dominican and Ecuadorian blend make up this cigar

The wrapper is a nice smooth chocolate caramel color, minimal veinage, no discernable tooth.  Some cracking noted at the foot but nothing of consequence.

No real outpouring on pre-light draw, smell was a bit flat as well pre-light.

after a lengthy lighting process it was a smooth taste at onset. a slightly sweet note was present on the short finish.

Nose hale did produce some spice, black pepper was dominant.DSC00240

This cigar has a smooth burn, with good flavor, some sweetness that hints of black cherry.  Notes of pepper are evident as is an earthy character.

Nice even burn, good amounts of smoke on the draw.  An overall good cigar for the price of about 6 bucks

Medium to Full body, but not much complexity.

Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigar review

Cigar review of the Arturo Fuente Opus X

DSCN0464

Fuente Fuente 5.6 X 46, Dominican Puro

Presentation :  over the top, this cigar comes in a cellophane wrapper, with a decroative foot band of red silk cloth, a cedar wrapper on the body, and a very elaborate cigar band, bearing the Opus X label.

Pre-light sniff gives some slight hint of cedar must surely from the body band just removed.

The wrapper on this stogie is very smooth, almost no veins to speak of, a rich reddish brown color.

The roll is tight, no soft spots noted at all.  A beautiful triple cap.

Snip, Snip and lets light this baby up, on pre-light draw, I picked up a nutmeggy to ginger like flavor, thats a first.

On light up, the black pepper hits hard, even for a cigar thats been aging in my humidor for over a year, and was at least three years aged prior to being given to me.

About an inch in and the pepper is joined by a hint of ginger on the finish, some creamy notes are also evident.  But the prominent flavor is pepper.  Although the initial burn started a bit uneven, it has since straightened out to near perfect.

DSCN0468

Some licorice has surfaced in conjunction with the ginger, its a bit odd, but interesting never the less.  the pepper has taken a back seat to this flavor combo.  at about 2 inches the ash was holding on strong but I tipped it off so as not to mess up my lap top.

The draw is excellent on this cigar, producing a thick smoke .  About half way now and the flavors have come together well, smooth finish, some pepper, ginger, and licorice still thriving.

The power on this stogie is formidable.  I must say its not for the meek and mild.

The last leg of this cigar has powered up.  But smooth all the way.

I can see why this cigar is so sought after, rightly so, an excellent Dominican puro.

Cigar review , Tatuaje Black label

DSCN0426This cigar review of the tatuaje black label is the second go round.  Although the first review clearly stated it was a good stogie, I met with some controversy from several cigar lovers in my circle.  They felt I was under rating this cigar.  Soooo, I put a couple into the humidor for a month or two and Im pulling one out to fire it up today and see if opinions are like what Ive always heard.  You know, everybody has one… What did you think I was gonna say. This is a cigar review of true moral values, dont ya know.

Lets get to it:

Torpedo stogie

All Nicaraguan blend

Rustic wrapper with some veins and mottleing

Foot is unfinished, that is to say left without a final cut, once again rustic

Prelight sniff gives a great barnyard aroma, very much what I like

Prelight draw has a minute pepper to it, which I didnt get the first time

Lets light up:  spicey, right from the onset, on the tongue throat and yet a slight creamyness on the lips, not sweet really just a sensation

The finish is initial spice diminished after a puff or to and gave way to a nutty, hay taste with some sweet notes, and now some slight sweetness on the lips.

Early nose-hale yields smooth smoke with little to no spice, some leathery aroma is however present.

DSCN0428

About an inch in to it and the ash is a nice whitish grey, some black mottling, appears to be pretty firm, no blooming.

The burn at this point is even.  If I re-call the last one I smoked had some consistent burn issues, i.e. uneveness.

I believe I just picked up a hint of ginger on the last draw, mixed with nuts, interesting.  Another puff confirms it, ginger is definitely what I would describe it as.   Now its about 12:30 mid day and Ive had a good breakfast of cuban bread and coffee, but Im feeling the power of this stogie.  Its got a kick to it, pretty nice indeed.

DSCN0430

Ohh! that puff at about 2 inches changed alot, spice is back, cayenne pepper like on the palate and tongue as well as the nose, when exhaled.

Lots of ginger, with pepper and again a creamyness, with slight sweetness on the lips on the next couple draws.  The complexity of this cigar is astonishing.  It is quite a bit different than the first black label that I reviewed.  I dont know what to attribute it to but its definitely a different smoke.  At about 3 inches the ash released.

The burn has remained quite even to this point, the smoke is not as thick as I would like.  The draw is very good and the cigar has remained firm to the half way mark.  With the last puff I was again hit with pepper all the way to the back of the throat, pretty intense.  The sweetness on the lips has increased along with the creaminess.  Its almost like a “sweet and spicey” tag team match with this cigar.

I think the most appealing part of this cigar is the fact , theres no long lasting parched taste on the palate.  The way some cigars leave.  There is none of that here, adding to the overall enjoyment.

On the last third now and everything is building, spice, ginger, sweetness, creaminess all getting to the forefront hand in hand.  Even the amount of smoke has built up to where Im very pleased and slightly overwhelmed but happy!

This cigar review has definitely moved the black label up a notch or two on my favorites list but I still favor the Conoju 2003 model, from TATUAJE.  I think if the amount of smoke had reached this level earlier in the stogie I would have a tough decision on my hands.  But this is a really outstanding cigar through and through.  The Complexity, burn and overall smokeability of this cigar is wonderful.  I would definitely recommend this cigar and cant wait for a few more months til I hit the other one in my humidor.

DSCN0431

Body: Full

Complexity: outrageous

Burn: even

Smoke: good overall, great at the last third

Alonzo Menendez cigar review, 42×7

Cigar Review of the Alonzo Menendez Cigar, 42×7

DSCN0416

Wrapper, Binder and Filler:  Brazilian

Body: Med-Full

Construction: very nice, some notable veins as is expected with any stogie, nice cap, minimal tooth, nice and tight

pre-light sniff:  barn yard

initial draw: earthy, some spice present but only minor notes

1 inch in or so:  black coffee developed as did the spice, earth still present

DSCN0420

nice tight even ash developing

2 inches in or so:  cocoa to go with the coffee, still some spice when nose haled, and a creamy finish is developing nicely

My ash fell off at 2.5 inches or so,  oops

Some notable bitterness developed which was unappealing, hope that doesnt last.

Bitterness subsided after about another inch, but not pleasant.

Almost like a shot of espresso, then it mellowed nicely giving way again to cocoa, and spice built again as well, when nose haled at the midway point.

And just like that the bitter espresso returned, thats enough for me to put this one down for good.   the bitterness is over the top.

DSCN0422

Oh well!  on to the next one

Cigar Review , Tatuaje Verocu Tubo (red label)

SDC10608

Cigar review / Tatuaje red label tubo

Pre-light sniff yielded some obvious cedar notes, most likely attributed to the removal of this beauty from the tube that it comes packaged in.

The appearance of this cigar is less rustic than its twin brother the black tube.

The foot is clipped even and clean.

The wrapper is a darker more even color than the tubo negro, with some medium vienage and tooth present.

The roll is even although on this particular cigar not very tight it gives way to light compression.  Its not a loosey goosey by any means but not firm.

Pre-light draw gives some leather and cedar.

Initial light draw is leathery and as was expected, spicey.

Some sweetness on the lips is noteable, pepper on the tongue.

Nose hale at the onset gives some spice but nothing overwhelming

About an inch into this cigar and the noteable flavors are leather, earth and slight pepper.

The draw is smooth and the burn although not razor sharp is very even.  The ash released after and inch but was light grey with some black spots at this point.  SDC10611

Of note here is that although the draw is smooth, not an extreme amount of full smoke, a bit weak in this area.

2 inches into this cigar review and the flavor has evolved a bit to a more black coffee.  The spicey notes are minimal but present.

This cigar needs a prettyconsistent puff to maintain ignition, if left unattended for even a minute it seems to want to go out.

Im picking up some chocolate notes along with the coffee and the spice has diminished to almost nothing.  The finish is creamy at this point and very enjoyable. Body is medium to full and there is the nice mild sweetness on the lips which has been present from the start. The burn has become more uneven but no touch up at this point, about half way.

SDC10613

And just like that from one puff to the next, BAMM! spice! and smoke! lots of smoke.  Good pepper flavor on the tongue and when nose haled, its almost like a different stogie was placed into my mouth. To go along with the pepper more cream in the finish, very nice transition at the half way mark.  Im removing the band to get to the last leg of this cigar review.

The spicey peppery flavor has built up to a very nice level as has the creamyness of the finish.  The burn evened out all on its own and the smoke is now full and thick.  Nothing like a good “back end” to keep this guy interested and happy.

Now at the bottom third, pepper lingers in the lips and tip of the tongue along with the sweet notes. Nose hale delivers just the right amount of spice.

Some leather has returned to mix it up with the pepper and chocolate/cocoa.

The change up from the first half to the the second has been very good.  Its a shame this cigar wasnt performing from the beginning but I wont take anything away from this back end, its developed into a real winner.  Can’t put it down good!

SDC10617

Summing it up:

Construction: The appearance is beautiful, this torpedo looks great, the roll was medium firm.

Draw: smooth but yielded less than adequate smoke at the beginning, then gave way at the back half to a great amount of smoke.

Burn: good , some running was evident but no touch ups required, and again it evened out at the back half.

Flavors:  evolved , leather, earth. pepper with  creamy finish to start.  Coffee, Chocolate/cocoa jumped in later and pepper built up and stayed strong to the end.

Strength : above average

Body: medium to full

Overall: very good cigar, I have yet to try a bad Tatuaje, they seem to have their finger on the pulse of blending top notch cigars.

Price: about 11.00 bucks a stick, very doable
